JLCS Financial Literacy Program receives National recognition from the U.S. Department of the Treasury
Since April 2003, over a 130 people received Financial Education within the variety of programs and services that John Lewis Community Services (JLCS) provides, thanks in part to a grant from the Iowa Homeownership Education Project. On May 13, 2004, this program was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Financial Education. Deputy Assistant Secretary Dan Iannicola, presented the award to Program Managers Dawn Teter and Maria Teresa Caligaris at a ceremony held at John Lewis Community Shelter.“We look all over the country for good programs and we’re confident we found one today,” Iannicola said. This program caught the department’s attention, he said, “by how they acclimate themselves to their environment dealing with a lot of people in a housing crisis. So many homeless programs are about giving people shelter this goes the extra step. That’s what makes this one special.”

Dawn Teter shares, “Whether you are ready to pursue your dream of buying your first home or moving out of a shelter, financial literacy is the foundation of achieving those dreams. At JLCS we strive to offer a flexible program which is tailored to the particular audience we are teaching. Further, we believe one on one counseling provides the extra support so often needed to overcome past bad spending habits, effectively learning to save and understanding the growth of personal assets through solid money management.
