John Lewis Community Services (JLCS) was founded in 1989 as a community and church led response to the death of “Quiet” John Lewis who died in a house fire he started to stay warm. John Lewis Community Services has grown to include an array of programs and services at multiple sites and is a Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Based Housing Development Organization. Its staff and board of directors are committed to responding to the needs of those who are homeless or experiencing a housing crisis in an effective and community minded manner.
The mission of JLCS is:
- To challenge the causes of homelessness by providing hospitality, housing and services that respect a person’s dignity and choice regardless of their status, physical or emotional, condition;
- To work collaboratively with the greater community in challenging the root causes of poverty and effecting systemic change through housing and community development activities.
It is out of this mission that JLCS conducts it business of providing quality supportive services, food service programs, property services and housing development. Below are two pie charts to share a “snapshot” of the types services and housing provided by JLCS or under development and numbers served, all of which are part of its mission.
